Burglar Alarm Security Systems

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Your home may be the most valuable asset you own and defending it is critically important. One of the unsurpassed methods of protecting your home particularly from burglars is by installing a burglar alarm system. Today’s systems are affordable and very much efficient. Although there are no burglar proof alarm systems, a good alarm system will help detect and discourage burglars. A burglar alarm system is a complex device that is equipped with sensors and a low-voltage power system that is controlled by a main panel. If or when the system’s signals are interfered with, the alarm goes off either causing loud noise to scare the burglar away or it sends signals to the monitoring company who will then dispatch police to the scene (depending on the system installed). The Burglar alarms have become prevalent widespread in businesses and certainly private homes. An effective burglar alarm system should accurately identify the correct signal to use to foster rapid response.

The most common alarm systems are Glass Break Detectors, Surface Door contacts, Garage Door contacts and Heat and Smoke Detectors. According to the National Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA), the best alarm system guards the entire boundary of a home. This is referring to every window, door or anywhere entry can be made into the home and areas inside where valuables are stored. A simple home protection alarm system is a closed circuit loop system where contacts on doors and windows are installed.

There are a wide variety of options to consider when you need an alarm system. They range from simple do-it-yourself kits to complex systems that have to be installed by experts in the field. However, all burglar alarm systems are designed with the same goal and that is to detect burglars.

Many alarm companies install a local alarm system that is also controlled by the company. These alarms ring a bell; sound a siren or buzzer on the premises. These are commonly used for residential purposes. These are useful in warding off burglars as any burglar would be daunted by the sound of loud noise that calls attention to him. This type of alarm system is useful if you live in apartment building or if you live in an area where the neighbourhood watch is operational.

Some firms provide central reporting alarms. In this case, signals are discreetly sent to the firms’ headquarters so that they can dispatch police or in some cases, their own alarm agents. Sometimes a direct alarm is attached to the local police or fire department. This type of system is suitable if you live in a quiet area where there are few neighbours and if you travel a lot.

When purchasing a burglar alarm system, take these factors into consideration:

1. What the system monitors

2. Ease of use for not just you but others in the home

3. Cost of purchasing the system plus set-up costs. Monitoring systems will have a monthly fee attached.

All About Acids and Bases

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Acids and bases are the terms that are used by chemists to categorize chemicals based on their pH levels. An acid is any matter that submit a hydrogen ion in solution. On the other hand, a base is any substance that generates a hydroxide ion in solution. However, there are many different theories by different theorists defining acids and bases. Some of them are outlined below:

In the seventeenth century, Robert Boyle first categorized matter as either acids or bases. He used the following characteristics to determine whether a matter is acid or base.

Acids                                                                     Bases

Taste sour                                                            Feel slippery
Corrosive to metals                                           Taste bitter
Change litmus red                                             Change litmus blue
Become less acidic when mixed with          Become less basic when mixed
Bases                                                                      with acids

According to Svante Arrhenius:

Acids produce H ions in aqueous solutions
Bases produce OH ions in aqueous solutions

According to Johannes Nicolaus Bronsted & Thomas Martin Lowry:

Acids are proton donors
Bases are proton receptors

According to Newton Lewis:

Acids are electron pair receptors
Bases are electron pair contributors

bearing in mind the number of theories, what exactly are acids?

1. The word acid comes from the Latin acere which means sour. Acids taste sour.

2. They change litmus from blue to red.

3. They react with bases to form salts and water

4. Upon reaction with an active metal such as zinc and aluminum, they develop hydrogen gas.

5. They are electrolytes

6. They are corrosive (burns your skin)

7. Acids have a pH less than 7

8. They react with carbonates to form carbon dioxide

What exactly are bases?

1. They taste bitter.

2. They are soapy or slippery

3. Bases don’t change the colour of litmus but they can turn acidified (red) litmus to blue.

4. Like acids, they are electrolytes

5. They react with acids to form salts and water.

6. They are also corrosive

7. Has pH of more than 7

Many acids and bases are very well-known common as we use them in our everyday lives. Many industries include the use of acids and bases in their processes to produce many consumer products.

Examples of acids are:

1. Citric acid – this is present in many fruits and vegetables especially citrus fruits like lemons and oranges.

2. Ascorbic acid or Vitamin C which is found in certain fruits

3. Vinegar (acetic acid)

4. Carbonic acid – used in the manufacture of soft drinks

5. Lactic acid that is found in buttermilk.

6. Hydrochloric acid in gastric juices

7. Sulphuric acid

8. Uric acid found in urine

9. Tannic acid in teas and wines

10. Tartaric acid found in grapes

Examples of bases are:

1. Detergents and cleaning agents

2. Soap

3. Lye

4. Household ammonia

5. Sodium hydroxide (caustic soda)

6. Calcium hydroxide (limewater)

7. Magnesium hydroxide or milk of magnesia

8. Bleaches

9. Toothpaste

Reflex Sight Explained

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Reflex sights can be classified as an optical device which emits a reticule image or set of images such as a crosshair onto a target so that someone can clearly identify where on the target object your mechanism is heading. Reflex sights should not be confused with laser sights, which actually sends a beam of light straight onto a target. Reflex sights are used by both persons within a military organization as well as civilians in order to quickly acquire their targets. In the military, reflex sights are normally used as a non-magnifying firearm sights. Other persons use reflex sights when they are speed shooting in sports like paintball, air soft and IPSC.

A reflex sight can be held at any length away from the eye without magnifying the image of the target object and at almost any angle, without allowing the image to become distorted or reticle, and without causing the crosshair image to move relative to the target. Depending on how the reflex sight is produced, the range to the target, and the scale of the angle at which it is viewed from can create error when the person is aiming, even though this rarely happens. If the shooter does not enlarge the picture through the reflex sights then the viewer is able to see a theoretically parallax-free image of the crosshair, shown around the target area. Un-magnified reflex sights are particularly a good addition when being used for targets over a short distance when they are used on pistols, submachine guns, and shotguns.

Persons who use the reflex sights often use both eyes, however this does not hinder the shooters ability to aim at the target and still have a normal perception of where the object target actually is. The brain will allow the dominant eye lead with an unobstructed view of the target object. This enables persons to aim and shoot swiftly at target objects in comparison to iron sights and telescopes.

There are three different category of reflex sights, open sights, full tube sights and small tube sights. Open sights which are also called a mini reflex sights needs works with only one reflective surface. Generally it is lighter than full tube sights and don’t come equipped with filters and other accessory options. Full tube sights are constructed with a cylindrical tube that has an optic glass which looks similar to a standard telescope sight. Some even provide you with the option of changing out the filters like the haze reducing filters. Small tube sights on is otherwise able to change the filter and sunshade attachments. Reflex sights are also useful for helping the target on other devices like telescopes and point-and-shoot digital cameras and are also used in sporting activities like animal hunting and target shooting.

Constitutional Amendments – How are They Done?

Monday, March 8th, 2010

A Constitutional Amendment is any form of adjustment to the constitution of a country. The constitution of a country consists of rulings that are approved by the congress of a country that are implemented to govern the general populous. In order for these amendments to be made, there are special measures that need to be implemented, which can sometimes follow irregular proceedings from what would be enacted for ordinary laws. A constitutional amendment has to be validated by a submission through either the members of the legislature system or by the request of certain citizen’s association. However, some amendments can only be approved with the direct influence of the electorate in a referendum.

The way in which a constitution is altered may vary from country to country. In some states the laws require that a constitutional amendment must be agreed upon by the legislature of a country on two separate occasions during two separate but consecutive terms, and is done through a general election. The proceedings of the legislature is then suspended to allow a general election whenever it is being adopted for the first time. This is done in countries like Denmark, The Netherlands, Iceland and Norway and in individual states in the United States like Iowa, Vermont and Wisconsin.

In countries like the US three quarters of congress have to agree upon a change in the constitution before it can be formally implemented. In countries like Switzerland, Canada and Australia, different requirements apply. In Canada, after a proposition is made by the members of parliament then the approval of a provincial legislature is required. While in Switzerland and Australia, a change in constitution has to be passed by a majority of electorates including separate majorities in each canton within the country.

Many states also combine various elements from each amendment proceedings. In cases like the French, their constitution amendment system is formulated from one or two procedures. It can either be done by a majority vote or by a referendum. In the U.S. Commonwealth of Massachusetts a constitutional amendment has to be made by a special majority of legislature during two back to back terms which is then sent to a referendum for a final approval.

In Austria, the Constitutional settings are much more moderate in regards to the recording of constitutional amendments. Almost any piece of parliamentary legislation can be selected as constitutional law if the required supermajority and other formalities for an amendment are met. An amendment may adopt to the form of a change of the centerpiece of the constitution, a change to another constitutional act, the B-VG, a new constitutional act, or a part of the legislative rules in a non-constitutional act.

How to Bake Chicken

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Chicken is a delicious, healthy and versatile decision when it comes to arranging a menu. You can cook chicken in a variety of ways, but one of the simplest and most nutritious methods is to bake it. You can bake an entire chicken, or if you are lacking time, chicken pieces like breasts, thighs, legs, and wings will be fine.

What Will You Need?

Approximately 2 to 3 lb chicken, chopped up

Freshly ground salt and pepper

Dried or fresh herbs like rosemary, tarragon, thyme, or oregano

Marinade (optional)

Olive oil or non-stick cooking spray

Roasting pan

Meat thermometer

Preparing the Chicken for the Oven

First thing you should always do when you prepare chicken is to wash the chicken then pat it gently, until dry. If you are going to use a marinade, you will need to marinate your chicken over night. A great marinade to use is Italian dressing. put the chicken in a shallow bowl or plastic bag with a zip-lock, and spread the marinade or Italian dressing over the pieces. Close tightly and marinate the night before in the refrigerator.

Preparing to Cook

Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Take your roasting pan and coat lightly with olive oil or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Remove the chicken out of the marinade if you did use one, and place the chicken skin side up in the roasting pan. Sprinkle salt and pepper as well as any of the other herbs you desire to use. If you are using a marinade, you will not need to season the chicken as much.

Cooking the Chicken

Put the chicken into the oven and bake for 50 minutes. Do not cover the chicken. To check whether it is done or not, use a meat thermometer to figure out the temperature. If you are cooking chicken breasts, the thermometer should read 170ºF, and for thighs, it should read 180ºF. Always ensure that you put in the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken.

Ensuring That Your Chicken is Ready To Eat

Eating pink chicken that is uncooked is not recommended. If you are still unsure whether your chicken is completely cooked or not, use a knife and cut through the thickest part of the chicken. When the juices run translucent and the meat is no longer pink, your chicken is ready to serve.
