Do You Know How To Build A Dog House?

A dog is one the most popular, adored and cherished domestic animal. They say it’s a man’s best friend and of certainly they are most times cared for as such. Dogs make great domestic animals as they offer protection, companionship and above all they are faithful. Dogs are also very clever so they are fun to have as pets. It has been revealed that individuals who own dogs have a longer life span and healthier. Dogs are like kids – they need to be appropriately nourished, cared for, protected and loved. One way of doing exactly that is by building a safe, comfortable house for your dog. Some people choose to buy a dog house; others hire someone to create one on their property. There are also some people who choose to construct it on their own. This is a good way to do something exceptional for your dog. Below are the instructions on how to make a doghouse.

How To Build A Dog House

Materials Required:

Tape measure

2 x 4 boards

3” Nails

½” Ply board

Tools Necessary:

Handsaw

Hammer

Pencil

Jigsaw

Sharp knife

Instructions

1. Use tape measure to measure your dog to get the size of the house.

2. Use handsaw to cut the 2 x 4 boards according to the measurements, i.e. 2 pieces for the length and 2 pieces for the width of the house. Use hammer and nails to attack the pieces together to form a bottom.

3. Cut a piece of ply board using hand saw. This should be big enough to cover the base. Nail it over the edges of the base to form the floor.

4. To make the frame around the house cut 2 x 4 boards of equal lengths for the corners and in the centre of each wall. Nail them around the four corners and the middle pieces too. Do not include a centre piece for the front to allow a doorway.

5. Measure the ply board and signify the size walls with a pencil then cut.

6. For the front piece, indicate a door large enough for the dog to pass through and use the saw to cut it out.

7. Affix the walls around the frame using your hammer and nails.

8. Take roof measurements with your tape measure then cut the corresponding sizes of 2 x 4 boards.

9. Center the front and back struts on the border of the front and back walls and nail them in position.

10. Cut a piece of 2 x 4 to the length of the doghouse with a little extra to hang over. Nail it in position on the top.

11. Cut three rafters for each side of the roof. To do this, take a piece of 2 x 4 board and place it along the roof from the corner of the dog house. Make notch marks using a jig saw then cut with the handsaw where you made the notches. Nail them in position.

12. Cut two 2 x 4 board to fit horizontally, from the roof middle to the side wall, 2 on each side. Nail them in place.

13. Measure and cut ply board to cover the roof then nail into place.

14. Place shingles on the roof using a sharp knife to pare edges where needed. Once the roof is done your doghouse is finished.

Tips:

Bear in mind the breed of dog you are constructing for as this will influence the size of the house and other features such as insulation.

The house must be big to hold the dog and still have sufficient space. If your dog is a puppy, build the house big enough to hold him when he is full-grown.

Paint the doghouse to make it more attractive.
